Purpose of the Test

An MRI of the abdomen and pelvis without contrast is used to diagnose conditions such as tumors, infections, inflammation, and abnormalities in the organs of the abdomen and pelvis.

When this test is required

An MRI of the abdomen and pelvis without contrast may be requested by a doctor if a patient is experiencing symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, or discomfort, or if a previous imaging test was inconclusive.

What the Test Detects

The MRI of the abdomen and pelvis without contrast produces detailed images of the organs, blood vessels, and tissues in the abdomen and pelvis. This allows doctors to identify any abnormalities, such as tumors or inflammation, in these areas.

Preparation for the Test

Before the MRI, patients may be asked to remove all metal objects from their body, as these can interfere with the magnetic field of the machine. Additionally, patients may be asked to avoid eating or drinking for a few hours before the test.

Sample Requirements

No sample is required for this test.

Additional Notes

MRI of the abdomen and pelvis without contrast is a safe and noninvasive test. However, it is not recommended for patients with certain medical conditions, such as pacemakers, aneurysm clips, or cochlear implants, as the magnetic field can interfere with these devices. Patients should inform their doctor if they have any implanted medical devices or if they are pregnant before undergoing an MRI of the abdomen and pelvis without contrast.
