Purpose of the Test

This test is used to evaluate blood flow and blood vessel abnormalities in the upper limb, such as narrowing, blockages, aneurysms, or clots. It is helpful in diagnosing conditions such as peripheral artery disease, deep vein thrombosis, and other vascular disorders.

When this test is required

This test may be ordered if a patient has symptoms such as arm pain, swelling, weakness, or numbness. It can also be ordered as a screening test for individuals at risk for vascular disease, such as those with diabetes or high blood pressure.

What the Test Detects

This test is used to visualize the blood vessels in the upper limb without using contrast material. The MRI machine creates detailed images of the blood vessels using a powerful magnetic field and radio waves.

Preparation for the Test

No specific preparation is needed for an MRI angiogram of the upper limb without contrast. However, patients may be asked to remove any metal objects from their body, such as jewelry or hairpins, and may need to wear a gown during the procedure.

No sample is required for this test.

Additional Notes

This test does not involve the use of contrast material, which can be beneficial for patients with kidney problems or allergies to contrast material. However, the images produced by this test may not be as detailed as those obtained with a contrast-enhanced MRI angiogram.
