Purpose of the Test

MRA Carotid without contrast is a diagnostic imaging test used to evaluate blood flow through the carotid arteries in the neck.

When this test is required

A healthcare provider may request an MRA Carotid without contrast if a patient has symptoms of carotid artery disease, such as a stroke, transient ischemic attack (TIA), or mini-stroke. It may also be used to monitor the progress of carotid artery disease or to assess the risk of stroke in patients with certain risk factors.

What the Test Detects

MRA Carotid without contrast is a diagnostic imaging test that uses magnetic fields and radio waves to produce detailed images of the carotid arteries in the neck. It does not use contrast material, which is often used in other types of imaging tests.

Preparation for the Test

Before the test, patients may be asked to remove any metallic objects, such as jewelry, before the scan. They may also be asked to change into a hospital gown before the procedure. Patients should inform their healthcare provider if they have a history of allergies, kidney problems, or are pregnant, as contrast material is not used in this test.
