Purpose of the Test

The MLL gene rearrangement test is performed to diagnose leukemia and identify genetic changes in the MLL gene. MLL rearrangements are found in both acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and are associated with a poor prognosis.

When this test is required

The MLL gene rearrangement test is typically requested when a patient has signs and symptoms of leukemia or if a complete blood count shows abnormal white blood cell counts.

What the Test Detects

The MLL gene rearrangement test detects genetic changes in the MLL gene, which is responsible for producing a protein that plays an important role in regulating cell growth and division.

Preparation for the Test

No special preparation is required before the test, but your doctor will provide you with specific instructions, such as fasting or stopping certain medications, if necessary.

Sample Requirements

The sample required is bone marrow aspirate and biopsy.

Additional Notes

The MLL gene rearrangement test is just one of several genetic tests used to diagnose leukemia and other blood disorders. Your doctor may also request other tests, such as cytogenetic testing or fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH), to help make a diagnosis and develop an appropriate treatment plan.
