Purpose of the Test

A microalbumin urine test is ordered to assess kidney function, particularly to detect early signs of kidney damage in individuals who are at high risk of developing kidney disease, such as those with diabetes or high blood pressure.

When this test is required

The test may be requested as part of a routine check-up or as a follow-up to abnormal results of a urine dipstick test.

What the Test Detects

The microalbumin urine test measures the amount of albumin, a protein, in the urine. Albumin is normally present in the blood, but when kidneys are functioning properly, they filter it out and only a small amount is present in the urine. If the kidneys are damaged or not functioning properly, larger amounts of albumin can leak into the urine.

Preparation for the Test

There are no specific preparations required for the test. However, it is recommended to avoid vigorous exercise, dehydration and certain medications that may affect the test results.

Sample Requirements

A random urine sample or 24-hour urine sample may be collected for testing.

Additional Notes

A single abnormal result does not indicate kidney disease. To confirm the diagnosis, two out of three samples collected over a period of three to six months must be abnormal. Additionally, results may be affected by factors such as exercise, infection, fever, or pregnancy, so these factors should be considered when interpreting the results.
