Purpose of the Test

This test is typically done as part of routine screening for breast cancer or when a woman has symptoms such as a lump or pain in her breast.

When this test is required

A mammogram of the right breast may be requested as part of routine breast cancer screening or if a woman has symptoms such as a lump or pain in her breast.

What the Test Detects

The mammogram of the right breast generates two views, the cranio-caudal (CC) and mediolateral-oblique (MLO) views of the breast tissue. The images show the internal structure of the breast tissue and can detect abnormalities such as cysts, calcifications, or tumors.

Preparation for the Test

When preparing for a mammogram, women should avoid using deodorant, perfume, or powder on their underarms or breasts as they can interfere with the results. Additionally, women should wear a two-piece outfit as they will need to undress from the waist up for the exam.

Sample Requirements

No samples are required for a mammogram.

Additional Notes

Mammograms can be uncomfortable or even painful for some women, but the discomfort is usually brief. It is important to discuss any concerns or discomfort with the technologist performing the exam.
