Purpose of the Test

A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast that is used to detect and diagnose breast cancer. It can detect small abnormalities in the breast tissue, such as tiny lumps or calcifications, that may not be detectable through a physical exam.

When this test is required

Mammograms are typically requested by a primary care physician or gynecologist as part of routine screening for breast cancer. They may also be requested by a breast specialist or oncologist for diagnostic purposes.

What the Test Detects

A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast that is used to detect and diagnose breast cancer. It produces images of the breast tissue that can show small abnormalities, such as lumps or calcifications, that may be indicative of cancer.

Preparation for the Test

On the day of the exam, it is best to avoid using deodorant, talcum powder, or lotion under the arms or on the breasts, as these substances can show up on the mammogram and interfere with the results. It is also recommended to wear a two-piece outfit, as you will need to undress from the waist up for the test.

Sample Requirements

No sample is required for a mammogram.

Additional Notes

Mammograms can be uncomfortable, as the breast tissue needs to be compressed in order to produce clear images. However, the compression only lasts for a few seconds and is necessary for accurate results. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should inform their healthcare provider before undergoing a mammogram, as special precautions may need to be taken.
