Purpose of the Test

Lyme IgG/IgM testing is done to diagnose an active or past infection with the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi, which is spread through tick bites and can cause Lyme disease.

When this test is required

Lyme IgG/IgM testing is requested when a healthcare provider suspects Lyme disease based on a person’s symptoms and medical history or if a person has been exposed to ticks.

What the Test Detects

Lyme IgG/IgM testing measures the levels of antibodies produced by the body in response to the Borrelia burgdorferi bacteria. IgM antibodies are produced early in the infection, while IgG antibodies are produced later and may persist for months to years after the initial infection.

Preparation for the Test

No specific test preparation is needed for Lyme IgG/IgM testing.

Sample Requirements

A blood sample is required for Lyme IgG/IgM testing.

Additional Notes

Lyme IgG/IgM testing is not always definitive, and false-negative results can occur in the early stages of the infection. If Lyme disease is suspected, a healthcare provider may order additional testing or treat based on clinical suspicion. It is also important to note that not all ticks carry Borrelia burgdorferi, so not all tick bites will lead to Lyme disease.
