Purpose of the Test

A lipase fluid test is usually done to diagnose and monitor various pancreatic diseases such as pancreatitis, cystic fibrosis, and pancreatic cancer. It can also help detect problems with the gallbladder or liver.

When this test is required

The lipase test is usually requested when someone has symptoms of pancreatitis, such as severe abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and fever. It may also be ordered when someone has symptoms of other conditions that affect the pancreas or when they have risk factors for these conditions.

What the Test Detects

Preparation for the Test

No special preparation is needed for a lipase fluid test. However, your healthcare provider may ask you to fast for a few hours before the test. Make sure to follow any instructions given by your healthcare provider before the test.

Sample Requirements

A lipase fluid test requires a blood sample. A healthcare professional will insert a needle into a vein in your arm and collect a small sample of blood.

Additional Notes

Additionally, certain medications and other factors can affect lipase levels, so it’s important to tell your healthcare provider about any medications you’re taking or any other factors that may affect the test results.
