Purpose of the Test

Thalassemia patients require frequent blood transfusions to manage their anemia. However, transfusion of blood products can lead to the accumulation of leukocytes, which can activate the immune system and cause various adverse effects, such as febrile non-hemolytic transfusion reactions, alloimmunization (development of antibodies against foreign blood antigens), and transmission of infectious agents. The use of leukocyte filters can reduce the number of leukocytes in transfused blood products and minimize these complications.

When this test is required

The use of a leukocyte filter is routinely requested for thalassemia patients undergoing blood transfusions to reduce the risk of adverse reactions.

What the Test Detects

A leukocyte filter does not perform any laboratory testing or analysis. It is a medical device designed to remove leukocytes from transfused blood products.

Preparation for the Test

The use of a leukocyte filter requires proper selection and positioning of the filter in the transfusion tubing by a trained healthcare professional.

Sample Requirements

The use of a leukocyte filter does not require any specific sample collection.

Additional Notes

Leukocyte filters are safe and effective in reducing the number of leukocytes in transfused blood products. However, they may also cause some side effects, such as hemolysis (breakdown of red blood cells), clogging of the filter, and loss of blood components. The filters should be used only by trained healthcare professionals and according to the manufacturer’s instructions. The use of leukocyte filters does not eliminate the need for appropriate blood typing, cross-matching, and infectious disease testing of blood products.
