Purpose of the Test

Ketones are formed in the body when it burns fat for energy instead of glucose (sugar). The test is done to detect the presence of ketones in urine, which may be a sign of several conditions such as uncontrolled diabetes, alcoholism, starvation, and a low-carbohydrate diet.

When this test is required

The test may be requested when someone with diabetes has symptoms of ketoacidosis, such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, fruity breath odor, confusion, or difficulty breathing. It may also be done if someone with diabetes is experiencing symptoms of hypoglycemia but their blood glucose level is not low.

What the Test Detects

The test measures the concentration of ketones (acetoacetate, acetone, and beta-hydroxybutyrate) in a urine sample.

Preparation for the Test

No special preparation is needed. However, it is important to tell the healthcare provider about any medications or supplements that the person is taking, as they can affect the test results.

Sample Requirements

A spot urine sample is required.

Additional Notes

If someone with diabetes has high ketone levels, they should seek immediate medical attention as it may be a sign of a serious condition called diabetic ketoacidosis. Additionally, a low-carbohydrate diet or fasting can cause the body to produce ketones, which is normal. However, prolonged high levels of ketones in the body can lead to ketoacidosis and other complications. It is important to follow a balanced and healthy diet and to talk to a healthcare provider before starting any new diet or exercise regimen.
