Purpose of the Test

Joint fluid for fungus stain/fungal smear is a laboratory test used to detect the presence of fungal organisms in the joint fluid. The test is used to diagnose fungal infections of the joints, which can cause joint pain, swelling, and stiffness.

When this test is required

Preparation for the Test

Sample Requirements

During the test, a sample of joint fluid is collected using a needle, and then treated with potassium hydroxide (KOH) to dissolve non-fungal material, such as cells and debris. The remaining fungal organisms are then viewed under a microscope after staining with a special fluid for fungus stain.
