Purpose of the Test

Insulin test after a glucose challenge is used to evaluate the ability of the body to produce and respond to insulin in people with symptoms of low blood sugar or high blood sugar. It is also used to diagnose and monitor diabetes and other conditions that affect glucose metabolism.

When this test is required

The test is requested when a person has symptoms of high or low blood sugar, such as frequent urination, thirst, hunger, weakness, fatigue, dizziness, or confusion. It is also requested as a part of diabetes screening, gestational diabetes screening, and monitoring of diabetes treatment.

What the Test Detects

The test measures the level of insulin in the blood 5 hours after the patient drinks a glucose solution.

Preparation for the Test

The patient is asked to fast overnight or for at least 8 hours before the test. The patient should also avoid exercise and smoking for at least 12 hours before the test. The patient should not eat or drink anything except water for 2 hours after the glucose drink.

Sample Requirements

A blood sample is required for the test, which is drawn from a vein in the arm. The test involves two blood draws, one before and one after a glucose drink.
