To evaluate the body’s insulin response to glucose and assess insulin resistance.
When this test is required
A high insulin level at 3 hours may indicate insulin resistance, impaired glucose tolerance, or impaired insulin secretion. A low insulin level may indicate that the body is producing insufficient insulin in response to glucose.
What the Test Detects
The test is used to evaluate insulin resistance and assess the body’s ability to produce and utilize insulin in response to glucose.
Preparation for the Test
Insulin levels in the blood 3 hours after consumption of a high dose of glucose.
Sample Requirements
Test preparation needed: The patient should fast overnight before the test and consume 75 grams of glucose dissolved in water. Blood samples are drawn at baseline and at 2 hours after glucose consumption, and may also be drawn at 1 hour and 3 hours depending on the testing protocol.
