Purpose of the Test

To diagnose or monitor diabetes and other conditions that affect blood sugar regulation. To evaluate the effectiveness of insulin therapy. To investigate insulin resistance or hypoglycemia.

When this test is required

Insulin tests are usually requested by doctors as part of routine blood work for people with diabetes or other conditions that may affect insulin production or use.

What the Test Detects

Insulin tests are conducted to measure the amount of insulin in the blood. This is important in the diagnosis and management of diabetes, a condition characterized by high blood sugar levels due to the inability of the body to produce or effectively use insulin.

Preparation for the Test

Fasting for at least eight hours is usually required before the test. You should inform your healthcare provider of any medications or supplements you are taking, as some may affect insulin levels.

Sample Requirements

A blood sample is required for insulin testing.

Additional Notes

It is important to note that insulin tests alone are not sufficient for the diagnosis of diabetes. Other tests, such as a fasting plasma glucose test or an oral glucose tolerance test, may be required to confirm the diagnosis of diabetes. Additionally, insulin tests are not recommended for people who are not diabetic and who have not been diagnosed with any conditions that affect insulin production or use.
