Purpose of the Test

The HLA-DQ2 and DQ8 allele detection test is used to identify the genetic predisposition to celiac disease, an autoimmune disorder that affects the small intestine. Celiac disease occurs when the immune system responds to gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye, leading to inflammation and damage to the small intestine.

When this test is required

The test may be requested for individuals who have a family history of celiac disease or exhibit symptoms of the condition. The test may also be used to identify individuals with a genetic predisposition to the disease, even if they do not exhibit symptoms.

What the Test Detects

The test detects the presence of the HLA-DQ2 and DQ8 alleles, which are genetic markers associated with celiac disease. These alleles are present in approximately 95% of individuals with celiac disease, but are also found in the general population.

Preparation for the Test

No specific preparation is needed for the test.

Sample Requirements

A blood sample is required for the test.

Additional Notes

The test is not a diagnostic test for celiac disease, but rather a tool to identify individuals who have a genetic predisposition to the condition. Further testing, such as serologic tests and intestinal biopsy, may be required to confirm the diagnosis. Additionally, the absence of the HLA-DQ2 or DQ8 allele does not exclude the possibility of developing celiac disease.
