Purpose of the Test

HEV (Hepatitis E Virus) PCR (quantitation) is a test performed to diagnose acute or chronic HEV infection in people with symptoms of liver disease, including jaundice, abdominal pain, and fatigue.

When this test is required

The test may be requested when a person has symptoms of liver disease and has been exposed to HEV through contaminated water or food. It may also be ordered for people who have traveled to areas with a high incidence of HEV infection.

What the Test Detects

The test detects the presence of HEV genetic material (RNA) in the blood and measures the amount (quantitation) of virus present in the blood.

Preparation for the Test

No specific test preparation is needed. However, you should inform your healthcare provider about any medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements.

Sample Requirements

The test requires a blood sample.

Additional Notes

HEV infection is usually self-limiting and does not require treatment in most cases. However, in some people, especially those with weakened immune systems or chronic liver disease, HEV infection can lead to serious complications. Early detection and appropriate treatment can improve the outcome in these cases.
