When this test is required

This test is ordered when a person has symptoms of a herpes infection, such as cold sores or genital sores. It can also be used to confirm a suspected herpes infection in a person with a history of sexual contact with someone who has herpes.

What the Test Detects

This test detects the genetic material (DNA) of the herpes simplex virus using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique. It can differentiate between HSV-1 and HSV-2 infections.

Preparation for the Test

No specific preparation is required for this test. However, the healthcare provider may recommend stopping certain medications before the test, such as antiviral drugs.

Sample Requirements

This test requires a sample of fluid or tissue from the sore, blister, or lesion. It can also be performed using cerebrospinal fluid or blood samples.

Additional Notes

Herpes infections are common and can be spread through sexual contact or close contact with an infected person’s sores. The virus can be dormant in the body and reactivated later, causing recurrent outbreaks of sores. There is no cure for herpes, but antiviral medications can help manage symptoms and reduce the frequency and severity of outbreaks. Safe sex practices can also help prevent the spread of the infection.
