Purpose of the Hepatitis “B” Profile Test

The Hepatitis B profile is typically ordered to determine if you have been infected with the HBV, and to evaluate the severity of the infection, and monitor treatment.

When this Hepatitis “B” Profile test is required

The test is typically ordered if you have symptoms of a liver disease, such as jaundice or abdominal pain, or if you have a history of exposure to HBV.

What the Hepatitis “B” Profile Test Detects

The Hepatitis B profile consists of several tests, including Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), Hepatitis B surface antibody (Anti-HBs), Hepatitis B core antibody (Anti-HBc), and Hepatitis B e-antigen (HBeAg). These tests detect the presence of specific proteins and antibodies associated with HBV infection.

Preparation for the Hepatitis “B” Profile Test

No specific test preparation is required, but you should inform your healthcare provider if you are taking any medications that may affect the results.

Sample Requirements

The test requires a blood sample, usually drawn from a vein in the arm.

It’s important to follow your healthcare provider’s instructions and to discuss any concerns you may have about the test or its results. If you test positive for HBsAg or HBeAg, your healthcare provider may order additional tests to evaluate the extent of the infection and determine the appropriate treatment.
