Purpose of the Test

A fungal culture and stain of hepatic fluid may be ordered if a healthcare provider suspects that a person has a fungal infection of the liver or the biliary system (the system of ducts and organs that produce and transport bile). This test helps to identify the type of fungus causing the infection and determine the appropriate treatment.

When this test is required

The test is requested when a healthcare provider suspects that a person has a fungal infection of the liver or biliary system. Symptoms of a fungal infection in the liver or biliary system may include fever, abdominal pain, jaundice, or abnormal liver function tests. A healthcare provider may also order the test to monitor the effectiveness of treatment for a known fungal infection.

What the Test Detects

A Hepatic Fluid for Fungus Culture/Sensitivity (C/S) with Fungus Stain (KOH) test is used to detect and identify fungal infections in the liver or biliary system. The test involves growing a sample of hepatic fluid in the laboratory to see if any fungus grows. The fungus can also be stained and viewed under a microscope to determine its characteristics.

Preparation for the Test

The healthcare provider will provide instructions for preparing for the ERCP procedure, which may include fasting for a certain period of time before the procedure and adjusting any medications the person is taking. It is important to follow all instructions carefully to ensure that the test results are accurate.

Sample Requirements

To perform the test, a sample of hepatic fluid is collected from the biliary system via a procedure called an ERCP (endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography). During this procedure, a flexible tube with a camera at the end is inserted through the mouth and down the throat, into the stomach and small intestine. A small catheter is then used to collect a sample of the hepatic fluid from the biliary system.

Additional Notes

In addition to a fungal culture and stain, other tests may be ordered to help diagnose a fungal infection in the liver or biliary system, such as blood tests or imaging studies (such as an ultrasound or CT scan). Treatment for fungal infections of the liver or biliary system may involve antifungal medications and, in some cases, surgery to remove infected tissue or drain abscesses. It is important to follow all instructions from the healthcare provider to ensure the best possible outcome.
