Purpose of the Test

The test is ordered to diagnose HBV infection and monitor treatment outcomes.

When this test is required

The test may be requested when a person has risk factors for HBV infection, such as being born to an HBV-infected mother, having unprotected sex with someone who is infected with HBV, or sharing needles with someone who is infected with HBV. It may also be ordered to monitor the response to treatment for HBV infection.

What the Test Detects

The test detects the presence of HBV DNA in the blood.

Preparation for the Test

No specific preparation is needed for the test.

Sample Requirements

A blood sample is required for the test.

Additional Notes

The test cannot differentiate between active and resolved HBV infection, as HBV DNA can be detected in the blood for several weeks after the virus has been cleared by the immune system. In addition, a negative result does not rule out the possibility of recent HBV infection, as it may take several weeks for the virus to be detectable in the blood. The interpretation of the test result should always be made in conjunction with a person’s medical history and other laboratory tests.
