Purpose of the Test

The GTT/GCT is performed to screen for gestational diabetes, a condition in which high blood sugar develops during pregnancy. Gestational diabetes can cause complications for both the mother and the baby, including pre-eclampsia, premature birth, and a larger-than-average baby.

When this test is required

The GTT/GCT is typically requested for pregnant patients who are at an increased risk for gestational diabetes, including those who are overweight, have a family history of diabetes, or have had gestational diabetes in a previous pregnancy.

What the Test Detects

The GTT/GCT measures the body’s ability to metabolize glucose. It evaluates the body’s response to a glucose load, which is consumed in the form of a sweet drink, and then the blood glucose levels are measured at different time points.

Preparation for the Test

To prepare for the test, the patient will need to fast for 8-12 hours before the test, which means no food or drink except for water. The patient should also avoid smoking and exercise before the test.

Sample Requirements

The test requires a blood sample taken at fasting (before the glucose drink is taken), and then 1 and 2 hours after drinking a 75-gram glucose solution.

Additional Notes

The GTT/GCT is an essential part of prenatal care, as gestational diabetes can have serious consequences for both the mother and the baby. Women who are diagnosed with gestational diabetes will require close monitoring during pregnancy and may need to make lifestyle changes or take medication to manage their blood sugar levels.
