Purpose of the Test

This test may be ordered when a person is suspected of having a condition that affects their glucose levels, such as diabetes, meningitis, or cancer.

When this test is required

The test may be requested when a person experiences symptoms that may indicate a glucose-related condition, such as frequent urination, increased thirst, fatigue, confusion, fever, headache, stiff neck, or seizures. It may also be requested as part of the evaluation of a known or suspected condition, such as meningitis or cancer.

What the Test Detects

The test measures the concentration of glucose (sugar) in a sample of fluid. Glucose is the primary source of energy for the body’s cells, and the level of glucose in the blood and other fluids is tightly regulated. Abnormal glucose levels may indicate a condition affecting glucose regulation, such as diabetes, meningitis, or cancer.

Preparation for the Test

In general, no specific preparation is needed. However, the healthcare provider may provide instructions on how to prepare for the test based on the specific type of fluid being tested.

Sample Requirements

The sample may be cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) if meningitis is suspected, pleural fluid if there is an accumulation of fluid in the lungs, peritoneal fluid if there is an accumulation of fluid in the abdomen, or other types of fluid.
