Purpose of the Test

The test is used to diagnose active TB in individuals suspected of having the disease. It is also used to monitor the response to treatment and to detect drug resistance in TB patients.

When this test is required

The test may be requested by a doctor when a patient is suspected of having TB or has symptoms of the disease, such as coughing, fever, night sweats, and weight loss. It may also be used to screen people who are at high risk of TB, such as those who have been in close contact with someone who has TB or those with weakened immune systems.

Preparation for the Test

No specific preparation is needed for the test. However, it is recommended to avoid smoking, eating, or drinking for at least 30 minutes before providing the sample. It is also important to follow the instructions of the healthcare provider regarding the collection and transportation of the sample to ensure accurate test results.

Sample Requirements

The test requires a sample of sputum (mucus coughed up from the lungs) or other respiratory specimens, such as bronchial washings or aspirates, or lung tissue obtained by bronchoscopy.
