Purpose of the GBS (Group-B Streptococcus) screening Test

GBS (Group-B Streptococcus) screening is done to identify the presence of GBS bacteria in pregnant women. GBS is a common bacteria found in the vagina and rectum of about 25% of women. In pregnant women, GBS can cause serious infections in newborns, such as sepsis, meningitis, and pneumonia. Testing can identify whether a woman is carrying GBS, so that steps can be taken to protect the baby during delivery.

When this GBS (Group-B Streptococcus) screening test is required

GBS screening is typically requested during prenatal care for pregnant women. It is usually done between the 35th and 37th weeks of pregnancy.

Additional Notes

GBS screening is an important test for pregnant women. If a woman tests positive for GBS, it does not necessarily mean that her baby will become infected. However, it is important to receive antibiotics during labor to reduce the risk of transmission to the baby. Women who test negative for GBS at 35-37 weeks of pregnancy do not need to be retested, even if labor is delayed or prolonged.
