Purpose of the Test

The FLT3 gene provides instructions for making a protein that helps control the growth and division of blood cells. Mutations in this gene can lead to the development of blood cancers, such as AML. Testing for FLT3 mutations can help with diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment planning for these types of cancers.

When this test is required

FLT3 gene mutation analysis may be requested after a patient has been diagnosed with AML or other blood cancers, or for patients with unexplained symptoms such as unexplained weight loss, fatigue, or fever.

What the Test Detects

The test looks for mutations in the FLT3 gene that can lead to the development of certain types of blood cancers.
