Purpose of the Test

ETT is ordered to assess the heart’s ability to respond to physical stress, evaluate symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, or palpitations during exercise, and diagnose or monitor various heart-related conditions such as coronary artery disease, heart valve disease, or heart failure.

When this test is required

This test may be requested if an individual experiences symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, or palpitations during exercise, or as part of a routine health checkup.

What the Test Detects

During the test, the patient is asked to walk on a treadmill or pedal a stationary bike while being monitored for changes in heart rate, blood pressure, and electrocardiogram (ECG) readings. The test is stopped when the patient reaches a predetermined level of exercise, experiences symptoms, or when the healthcare provider determines it is safe to stop.

Preparation for the Test

Patients should avoid caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol for at least three hours before the test. They should also wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing and athletic shoes suitable for exercise.

Sample Requirements

No sample is required for this test.

Additional Notes

ETT is generally considered a safe and non-invasive procedure. However, there is a small risk of complications such as chest pain, irregular heart rhythms, or a heart attack. It is important to discuss any concerns or questions you may have with your healthcare provider before the test.
