Purpose of the Test

ER/PR receptors testing is performed to determine whether a breast cancer tumor is hormone receptor-positive or hormone receptor-negative. Hormone receptor-positive tumors have receptors for the hormones estrogen and/or progesterone, which promote their growth. Identifying hormone receptor-positive tumors helps doctors determine the best treatment plan for a patient.

When this test is required

ER/PR receptor testing is typically requested after a breast cancer diagnosis. It may also be requested if a patient has a family history of breast cancer or if they have other factors that increase their risk of breast cancer.

What the Test Detects

ER/PR receptors testing measures the amount of estrogen and progesterone receptors in breast cancer cells. The test is usually performed using immunohistochemistry (IHC), which uses antibodies to detect the presence of the receptors on the surface of breast cancer cells.

Preparation for the Test

No specific preparation is needed for ER/PR receptor testing.

Sample Requirements

The sample required for ER/PR receptor testing is a small piece of breast tissue that has been removed during a biopsy or surgery.

Additional Notes

ER/PR receptor testing is an important part of breast cancer treatment planning. It helps doctors determine the best treatment options for their patients and can also be used to monitor the effectiveness of treatment over time.
