Purpose of the Test

EMG/NCS of the upper limbs may be recommended if a patient experiences symptoms such as muscle weakness, numbness, tingling, or pain in the arms or hands. The test may also be ordered if a patient has a suspected nerve or muscle disorder affecting the upper limbs.

It may also be ordered if a doctor suspects a nerve or muscle disorder affecting the upper limbs or if a doctor needs to evaluate the function of the muscles and nerves before and after surgery.

What the Test Detects

EMG/NCS of the upper limbs evaluates the electrical activity of the muscles and nerves in the arms and hands. The test measures the strength and duration of muscle contractions and the speed and strength of nerve impulses as they travel between the brain and the upper limbs.

Preparation for the Test

Patients should avoid applying any lotions or oils to their skin on the day of the test. They may be asked to wear loose-fitting clothing that allows easy access to the muscles being tested. They should also inform their doctor if they have any medical conditions, such as a bleeding disorder or a pacemaker, that may affect the test results.

Sample Requirements

No sample is required for EMG/NCS of the upper limbs.

Additional Notes

EMG/NCS of the upper limbs is generally safe, but there is a small risk of bruising, bleeding, or infection at the site of the needle insertion.
