Purpose of the Test

Dengue virus IgM testing is done to detect acute or recent infection with the dengue virus. It is used to diagnose dengue fever, which is a viral infection transmitted by mosquitoes in tropical and subtropical regions.

When this test is required

The test may be requested when a person has symptoms of dengue fever, especially if they have recently traveled to a region where dengue fever is endemic. The test may also be ordered if there is an outbreak of dengue fever in the area.

What the Test Detects

The test measures the presence and level of dengue virus IgM antibodies in the blood. These antibodies are produced by the immune system in response to an infection with the dengue virus.

Preparation for the Test

No special preparation is needed for the test.

Sample Requirements

A blood sample is required for dengue virus IgM testing.

Additional Notes

The dengue virus IgM test is most accurate when performed within the first few days of the onset of symptoms. It may not be reliable if performed too early or too late in the course of the infection. Dengue virus IgM testing should always be interpreted in conjunction with the patient’s symptoms, travel history, and other laboratory test results.
