Purpose of the Test

Dengue RNA by PCR (polymerase chain reaction) is a diagnostic test used to detect the genetic material (RNA) of the dengue virus in a patient’s blood. The test is used to confirm a diagnosis of dengue fever, a viral infection transmitted by mosquitoes.

When this test is required

The test may be requested by a healthcare provider when a patient is experiencing symptoms of dengue fever, has been in an area where dengue is prevalent, or has been exposed to someone with dengue fever.

What the Test Detects

The test is used to detect the presence of dengue virus RNA in a patient’s blood. RNA is the genetic material of the virus, and detecting it in a patient’s blood confirms the presence of the virus and a diagnosis of dengue fever.

Preparation for the Test

No special preparation is required for this test.

Sample Requirements

A blood sample is required for this test. The blood is typically drawn from a vein in the arm using a needle.

Additional Notes

PCR testing is highly sensitive and specific for the detection of dengue virus RNA, but false positives and false negatives can occur. Additional tests or clinical evaluation may be needed to confirm the diagnosis. Dengue fever can be a serious illness, and early detection and treatment can improve outcomes. It is important to take steps to prevent mosquito bites to reduce the risk of dengue fever and other mosquito-borne illnesses.
