Purpose of the Test

Dengue NS1 antigen testing is performed to diagnose acute dengue virus infection in individuals with symptoms such as fever, headache, joint and muscle pain, and rash.

When this test is required

The NS1 antigen test is often requested when a patient presents with symptoms of dengue fever, such as fever, headache, muscle and joint pain, and a rash, particularly in areas where dengue is endemic. It may also be ordered if a patient has recently traveled to an area with a high incidence of dengue fever.

What the Test Detects

Dengue NS1 antigen is a type of test used to diagnose dengue fever, a viral infection caused by the dengue virus. The test detects the presence of the NS1 protein, which is produced by the virus during the early stages of infection, in a patient’s blood sample.

Preparation for the Test

It is recommended to get tested for dengue NS1 antigen as soon as symptoms appear or within the first few days of onset, as the test may not be as accurate after this period. If the test is negative, your healthcare provider may recommend additional testing, such as a dengue antibody test or a PCR test, to confirm or rule out dengue fever.

Sample Requirements

The sample required for the NS1 antigen test is a blood sample, which is usually collected using a needle inserted into a vein in the arm. No special preparation is required for the test, but it is important to inform your healthcare provider if you are taking any medications or have any underlying medical conditions that may affect the test results.

Additional Notes

It is important to note that the NS1 antigen test is not always accurate and false negatives and false positives are possible. It should be used in conjunction with other diagnostic tests and clinical evaluation by a healthcare provider. Treatment for dengue fever is supportive and focuses on relieving symptoms. Severe cases may require hospitalization. Preventative measures include avoiding mosquito bites, particularly during the daytime when the dengue mosquito is most active, and eliminating standing water where mosquitoes can breed.
