Purpose of the Test

Cystic fluid is fluid that has accumulated in a cyst or sac-like structure in the body. If a healthcare provider suspects that a cystic fluid collection may be due to TB, they may order an AFB smear/ZN stain test on a sample of the fluid to check for the presence of AFB.

When this test is required

This test may be requested when a person has symptoms of TB, such as a persistent cough, fever, night sweats, weight loss, and fatigue, and a cystic fluid collection is suspected to be due to TB or another infection caused by AFB. It may also be ordered when a person has been exposed to someone with TB or is at a higher risk of developing the disease.

What the Test Detects

The AFB smear/ZN stain test on cystic fluid is used to detect the presence of acid-fast bacilli (AFB) in a sample of cystic fluid. This test is used to diagnose tuberculosis (TB) or other infections caused by AFB.

Preparation for the Test

There is no specific preparation required for the AFB smear/ZN stain test on cystic fluid. However, it is important to let your healthcare provider know if you are taking any medications, as some medications can interfere with the test results.

Sample Requirements

To perform the test, a sample of cystic fluid is collected through a procedure called aspiration. The healthcare provider will use a needle and syringe to remove the fluid from the cyst. The sample is then sent to a laboratory for testing.

Additional Notes

It is important to note that a negative AFB smear/ZN stain test does not necessarily rule out TB or other AFB infections. A negative test may mean that the bacteria are not present in the sample or may be present in low numbers that are below the detection limit of the test. Further testing, such as a culture or molecular test, may be needed to confirm a diagnosis of TB or other AFB infections.
