Purpose of the Test

CT venography of the lower limbs is a diagnostic imaging test used to evaluate the veins in the legs and detect the presence of blood clots or other abnormalities. It uses a contrast agent and X-rays to produce detailed images of the veins in the legs.

When this test is required

What the Test Detects

The results of the CT venography are used to detect the presence of blood clots or other abnormalities in the veins of the legs, which can help guide treatment decisions. If a blood clot is detected, the patient may be started on anticoagulant medication to prevent the clot from getting larger or breaking off and causing a pulmonary embolism.

Preparation for the Test

During the procedure, the patient lies on a table and a contrast agent is injected into a vein in the arm or hand. The X-ray machine rotates around the patient, taking multiple images that are assembled into a three-dimensional image of the veins in the legs.

Sample Requirements

No sample is required for this test, but the patient may need to remove any clothing or jewelry that could interfere with the imaging, and may be asked to wear a hospital gown. In some cases, the patient may need to fast for several hours before the test.
