CT Skull Base Plain may be ordered to investigate and diagnose conditions affecting the skull base, such as tumors, fractures, infections, and congenital abnormalities.
When this test is required
A CT Skull Base Plain may be requested by a doctor when a patient has symptoms suggestive of a skull base abnormality or as a follow-up imaging test to monitor the effectiveness of treatment for a previously diagnosed condition.
What the Test Detects
CT Skull Base Plain is used to produce detailed images of the bones of the skull base, including the temporal bones, sphenoid bone, occipital bone, ethmoid bone, and parts of the frontal and parietal bones.
Preparation for the Test
Usually, no special preparation is required for a CT Skull Base Plain. However, the patient may be asked to remove any metal objects or jewelry that could interfere with the imaging.
Sample Requirements
No sample is required for this test.
Additional Notes
As CT Skull Base Plain uses ionizing radiation to create the images, the patient may be exposed to a small amount of radiation during the test. Pregnant women should inform their doctor or the radiology technologist before the test, as radiation can be harmful to the developing fetus.
