Purpose of the Test

CT (computed tomography) scans are used to produce detailed images of the inside of the body. When a CT scan is done on three or more regions of the body, it is typically ordered to evaluate multiple areas for possible injury, disease, or abnormality.

When this test is required

CT scans of three or more regions of the body may be requested when patients present with symptoms in multiple areas of the body or for routine screening in certain populations, such as individuals with a history of cancer.

What the Test Detects

A CT scan uses X-rays and computer technology to produce detailed images of the inside of the body. When a CT scan is done on three or more regions of the body, it is typically used to evaluate multiple areas for possible injury, disease, or abnormality.

Preparation for the Test

The preparation for a CT scan will vary depending on the areas of the body being evaluated. In general, patients may be asked to avoid eating or drinking for a period of time before the test and to remove any jewelry or metal objects from the body. Patients should also inform their healthcare provider if they have any allergies to contrast dye or any other medications.

Sample Requirements

No samples are required for a CT scan.

Additional Notes

CT scans use X-rays and, in some cases, contrast dye, which may be harmful to some individuals, such as those who are pregnant or have kidney problems. Patients should inform their healthcare provider if they have any concerns or questions about the test.
