This test is ordered when a patient has symptoms such as chronic sinusitis, sinus headaches, facial pain, or a deviated septum. It can also be used to evaluate the extent of sinus disease, such as tumors, infections, or inflammation.
When this test is required
A healthcare provider may order a CT PNS with and without IV contrast when a patient is experiencing symptoms of sinus disease, or when other imaging tests are inconclusive.
What the Test Detects
CT PNS with and without IV contrast is used to produce detailed images of the paranasal sinuses. The contrast dye is injected into a vein in the arm, which helps to highlight any abnormalities in the sinuses.
Preparation for the Test
The patient may be required to avoid eating or drinking for a certain period of time before the test. The patient should inform the healthcare provider if they have any allergies, particularly to iodine, or if they are taking any medications that may interfere with the test results.
Sample Requirements
No specific sample is required for this test.
Additional Notes
The patient should inform their healthcare provider if they are pregnant or may be pregnant, as the radiation from the CT scan may harm the developing fetus. The patient may also experience mild discomfort or a metallic taste in their mouth from the contrast dye.
