Purpose of the Test

The test is typically ordered to investigate the cause of lower back pain or to evaluate the presence of abnormalities such as tumors, infections, fractures, or herniated discs.

When this test is required

The test is requested when a patient presents with lower back pain, suspected spinal abnormalities, or has sustained an injury to the lower back.

What the Test Detects

The test uses X-rays to produce detailed images of the lumbar spine, which are enhanced by a contrast dye that is injected into a vein in your arm. The contrast dye helps to highlight blood vessels, nerves, and other structures in the spine, which can help your doctor to identify any abnormalities.

Preparation for the Test

Before the test, you may be asked to fast for a few hours and to drink plenty of fluids to prepare for the contrast dye. You should also inform your doctor if you have any allergies, particularly to contrast dyes, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Sample Requirements

No sample is required for this test.

Additional Notes

CT Lumbar Spine with Contrast is a safe and non-invasive procedure, but it does involve exposure to X-rays and contrast dye, which may cause allergic reactions in some patients. If you have any concerns or questions about the test, speak with your doctor.
