Purpose of the Test

CT enterography may be recommended if a patient has symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, weight loss, or blood in the stool, and there is a suspicion of inflammatory bowel disease, such as Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis. CT colonography may be recommended for colorectal cancer screening or if a patient has symptoms such as abdominal pain, changes in bowel habits, or blood in the stool, and there is a suspicion of colorectal cancer or polyps.

When this test is required

CT enterography and colonography may be requested by a doctor when a patient experiences symptoms related to the small or large intestines or for screening purposes. The tests may be ordered if a doctor suspects inflammatory bowel disease or colorectal cancer.

What the Test Detects

CT enterography and colonography use a combination of X-rays and computer technology to produce detailed images of the small and large intestines, respectively. The tests can help identify abnormalities such as inflammation, ulcers, tumors, or polyps.

Preparation for the Test

Patients may be asked to follow a special diet or to fast before the test. They may also be asked to drink a contrast material or take a laxative to help visualize the intestines. Patients should inform their doctor if they have any allergies, kidney problems, or other medical conditions that may affect the test results.

Sample Requirements

No sample is required for CT enterography or colonography.

Additional Notes

CT enterography and colonography are generally safe, but there is a small risk of radiation exposure and allergic reactions to the contrast material. Patients should inform their doctor if they are pregnant or breastfeeding, as radiation exposure can be harmful to the developing fetus or infant. The cost of CT enterography and colonography can vary depending on the location and the type of test performed.
