Purpose of the Test

HRCT Chest is usually requested when a patient has a persistent cough, shortness of breath, chest pain, or other respiratory symptoms. It can also be used to monitor the progression of a known respiratory condition, to assess the response to treatment, and to screen for lung cancer in high-risk individuals.

When this test is required

HRCT Chest may be requested if you have persistent respiratory symptoms, have a known respiratory condition that needs monitoring, or if your doctor suspects you may have lung cancer. Your doctor may also recommend an HRCT Chest if a chest X-ray has shown abnormal findings.

What the Test Detects

HRCT Chest uses a series of X-rays to create detailed images of the lungs. The test produces multiple cross-sectional images that can be combined to create a 3D image of the chest. The images produced by HRCT Chest are much more detailed than those produced by a standard chest X-ray.

Preparation for the Test

There is no specific preparation required for HRCT Chest. However, you may be asked to remove any metal objects or jewelry before the test, as they can interfere with the imaging.

Sample Requirements

No sample is required for this test.

Additional Notes

HRCT Chest is a safe and non-invasive test, but it does involve exposure to ionizing radiation. The amount of radiation exposure is typically small and unlikely to cause harm, but you should inform your doctor if you are pregnant or may be pregnant. Additionally, the test may require you to lie still for an extended period, which can be uncomfortable for some people.
