Purpose of the Test

This test is usually ordered to help diagnose or monitor conditions affecting the lungs, heart, blood vessels, liver, spleen, kidneys, and other abdominal organs. It may be used to evaluate masses, tumors, inflammation, infections, or other abnormalities.

When this test is required

This test may be requested by a doctor if a person has symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, cough, fever, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, or unexplained weight loss. It may also be ordered as a routine screening test for people at high risk of developing certain conditions, such as lung cancer.

What the Test Detects

This test is used to produce detailed images of the chest and abdominal organs using X-rays and a contrast material. The contrast material is injected into a vein to help highlight the blood vessels and organs, making it easier to identify any abnormalities.

Preparation for the Test

Before the test, you may be asked to fast for a few hours and to drink plenty of fluids to help flush the contrast material out of your system. You may also be asked to avoid certain medications and to wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing.

Sample Requirements

No sample is required for this test.

Additional Notes

A CT chest and abdomen with contrast does involve exposure to ionizing radiation, which can be harmful in high doses. However, the benefits of the test usually outweigh the risks, especially if it helps to diagnose or monitor a serious condition. Be sure to talk to your doctor about any concerns you may have about the test.
