Purpose of the Test

This test is typically used to evaluate patients with suspected liver cancer or other liver abnormalities, such as cirrhosis or hepatitis. It can also be used to monitor the effectiveness of treatment for liver diseases.

When this test is required

This test is typically requested when a doctor suspects liver cancer or other liver abnormalities, or as part of routine cancer screening for patients at high risk of developing liver cancer.

What the Test Detects

This test uses contrast material and imaging technology to create detailed pictures of the liver. The “biphasic” aspect of the test refers to the fact that images are taken at two different times, during the arterial and portal venous phases, to better visualize any abnormalities.

Preparation for the Test

Patients will typically need to fast for several hours prior to the test, and may need to avoid certain medications that can interfere with the imaging results. They may also need to drink a contrast material prior to the test.
