Purpose of the Test

A CT angiography of the intracranial arteries is usually ordered to evaluate blood flow in the brain and detect any abnormalities in the blood vessels, such as aneurysms, arterial stenosis, or arteriovenous malformations (AVMs).

When this test is required

The test is typically requested by a doctor or specialist when they suspect a patient may have arterial disease or related conditions in the intracranial arteries. It may also be ordered as a follow-up to previous imaging tests, such as an ultrasound or MRI.

What the Test Detects

The test is used to generate detailed images of the intracranial arteries in the brain. The contrast dye injected into the patient’s bloodstream highlights the blood vessels, allowing them to be seen more clearly on the images.

Preparation for the Test

The patient may need to fast for a few hours before the test, and they may need to avoid certain medications that could interfere with the imaging results. They should inform their doctor if they are pregnant or have a history of kidney problems.

Additional Notes

As with any medical imaging test, there is a small amount of radiation exposure associated with a CT angiography.
