Purpose of the Test

CSF (Cerebrospinal Fluid) testing for TLC (Total Leukocyte Count) and DLC (Differential Leukocyte Count) is done to evaluate inflammation or infection in the brain or spinal cord.

When this test is required

The test may be requested if an individual has symptoms that suggest inflammation or infection in the central nervous system. The test is also used to monitor the response to treatment for infections or other conditions.

What the Test Detects

The test measures the number and types of white blood cells in the CSF. TLC provides the total number of leukocytes in the CSF, while DLC identifies the different types of leukocytes, such as lymphocytes, neutrophils, monocytes, and eosinophils.

Preparation for the Test

There is no specific test preparation required. However, the healthcare provider may advise the individual to avoid certain medications that may interfere with the test results.

Sample Requirements

The test requires a sample of CSF, which is a clear, colorless fluid that surrounds the brain and spinal cord.

Additional Notes

CSF testing for TLC and DLC is a critical test in the diagnosis and management of central nervous system infections or inflammatory conditions. The test may be combined with other tests, such as culture, Gram stain, or antigen detection, for a comprehensive evaluation.
