Purpose of the Test

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) for adenosine deaminase (ADA) test is used to diagnose tuberculosis (TB) meningitis. ADA is an enzyme that is produced in large amounts by immune cells in response to the presence of TB bacteria. Thus, measuring the ADA level in CSF can help in the diagnosis of TB meningitis.

When this test is required

The test is requested when a doctor suspects TB meningitis and wants to confirm the diagnosis.

What the Test Detects

The test measures the level of adenosine deaminase (ADA) enzyme in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).

Preparation for the Test

No specific preparation is required for the test. However, the doctor may instruct the patient to stop taking certain medications that can interfere with the test results.

Sample Requirements

The test requires a sample of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), which is obtained through a lumbar puncture procedure.

Additional Notes

The test is not specific to TB meningitis and cannot be used as the sole diagnostic tool. It is usually used in conjunction with other diagnostic tests. In addition, some conditions, such as HIV infection, can cause a false positive result in the ADA test.
