Purpose of the Test

These tests are necessary to prevent transfusion reactions, which can range from mild to life-threatening. Transfusion reactions occur when the recipient’s immune system recognizes the donor’s blood as foreign and attacks it. This can result in symptoms such as fever, chills, hives, and difficulty breathing.

When this test is required

These tests are requested when a patient needs a blood transfusion. They are usually ordered by a physician or other healthcare provider who is managing the patient’s care.

What the Test Detects

The cross match test is used to check for compatibility between the donor’s blood and the recipient’s blood. The phenotyped/antigen negative packed red cells test is used to select packed red cells that are compatible with the recipient’s blood type and that do not contain any antigens that the recipient may have an allergic reaction to.

Preparation for the Test

There is no specific test preparation needed for the recipient. However, donors may need to undergo screening to determine their blood type and any potential risk factors that could affect the compatibility of their blood with the recipient’s blood.

Sample Requirements

To perform these tests, a blood sample is required from both the donor and the recipient.

Additional Notes

It is important to note that these tests are only one part of ensuring a safe blood transfusion. Other factors, such as proper identification of the donor and recipient, proper storage and handling of the blood, and appropriate monitoring of the patient during and after the transfusion, are also critical to ensuring a safe and effective transfusion.
