Purpose of the Test

This test is done to diagnose or rule out a current infection with the Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV), also known as Congo virus. The virus is a tick-borne virus that causes hemorrhagic fever, with symptoms ranging from mild fever to severe bleeding and multi-organ failure. Early detection and treatment can improve outcomes, so testing is important for anyone suspected of having been exposed to the virus.

When this test is required

This test may be requested when someone has symptoms of CCHF or has been exposed to the virus.

What the Test Detects

This test detects the genetic material (RNA) of the CCHF virus in a blood sample. It can determine if a person is currently infected with the virus.

Preparation for the Test

No specific preparation is usually necessary, but your healthcare provider may give you specific instructions.

Sample Requirements

The test requires a blood sample.

Additional Notes

The CCHF virus is rare, but it is considered a potentially serious infection. It is important to take precautions to avoid tick bites, and to seek medical attention if you develop symptoms after a tick bite or after exposure to someone with a known CCHF infection.
