Purpose of the Test

The CMV (Cytomegalovirus) PCR test is performed to detect and quantify the amount of CMV DNA in a sample. The test helps in diagnosing and monitoring CMV infections, especially in individuals with weakened immune systems.

When this test is required

The test is usually requested when an individual has symptoms of a CMV infection, or when an individual with a weakened immune system is at risk of developing a CMV infection. It may also be requested to monitor the effectiveness of CMV treatment.

What the Test Detects

The test uses PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) technology to detect and quantify the amount of CMV DNA in a sample.

Preparation for the Test

There is no specific test preparation required. However, the healthcare provider may advise the individual to avoid certain foods or medications that may interfere with the test results.

Sample Requirements

The sample required for this test is usually blood, urine, or saliva.

Additional Notes

The CMV PCR test is highly sensitive and can detect very low levels of CMV DNA in a sample. However, it does not distinguish between active and inactive infections. In addition, the test may give false-positive or false-negative results, and therefore, it should be interpreted in conjunction with other clinical information.
