Purpose of the Test

A chloride test is typically ordered as part of a comprehensive metabolic panel (CMP) to evaluate the electrolyte balance in the body. The test may be ordered to help diagnose and monitor conditions such as dehydration, kidney disease, respiratory alkalosis or acidosis, and certain types of metabolic acidosis or alkalosis.

When this test is required

The chloride test may be requested as part of a routine health checkup, or when an individual is experiencing symptoms such as persistent vomiting or diarrhea, fatigue, weakness, confusion, or swelling. The test may also be ordered as a follow-up to abnormal sodium or potassium levels, or when an individual is undergoing treatment for an electrolyte imbalance.

What the Test Detects

The chloride test measures the level of chloride, an electrolyte, in a fluid sample such as blood, urine, or sweat.

Preparation for the Test

No specific preparation is needed for a chloride blood test. However, it is recommended to inform the healthcare provider of any medications, supplements, or herbal remedies that an individual is taking, as certain medications such as diuretics can affect the test results. If a sweat test is ordered, it is important to avoid applying any creams or lotions to the skin prior to the test.

Sample Requirements

The test requires a blood or urine sample. In some cases, a sweat test may be performed to measure the level of chloride in sweat.

Additional Notes

It is important to inform the healthcare provider of any medications, supplements, or herbal remedies that an individual is taking, as certain medications such as diuretics can affect the test results. In some cases, additional tests such as a sodium, potassium, or bicarbonate test may be ordered to further evaluate the electrolyte balance in the body. If a sweat test is ordered, it is important to avoid applying any creams or lotions to the skin prior to the test.
