Purpose of the C2 Monitoring (Whole Blood) Test

This test is usually ordered to evaluate the function of the complement system in the body, which is a part of the immune system that helps fight off infections and remove damaged cells from the body. It may also be ordered to help diagnose and monitor certain autoimmune diseases and conditions, such as lupus or vasculitis, that can affect the complement system.

When this C2 Monitoring (Whole Blood) test is required

This test may be requested when a healthcare provider suspects an autoimmune disease or condition that affects the complement system. It may also be ordered to monitor the response to treatment for these conditions.

What the C2 Monitoring (Whole Blood) Test Detects

This test measures the level of complement C2 protein in the blood. Complement C2 is one of several proteins that make up the complement system, which is a part of the immune system. The complement system helps destroy foreign substances such as bacteria and viruses and remove damaged cells from the body. Complement C2 is also involved in the development of certain autoimmune diseases and conditions.

Preparation for the C2 Monitoring (Whole Blood) Test

In most cases, no special preparation is needed for this test. However, it’s always a good idea to check with the healthcare provider to see if there are any specific instructions.

Sample Requirements

This test requires a blood sample, which is usually drawn from a vein in the arm.

Additional Notes

This test is just one component of the evaluation of autoimmune diseases and conditions. Other tests, such as antinuclear antibody (ANA) testing and complement C3 testing, may also be ordered to help diagnose and monitor these conditions.
